Thailand part 3
Thailand is an amazing place! The smells are something you have to experience because there’s no way to explain them. Some are good and some not-so-much. :-) It’s just so different than the typical town in the US. There’s such beauty and yet a lot of poverty. There were little vendor carts all along the streets. People had woks full of hot oil and were cooking food right on the streets and selling to people just walking by. We saw a lot of familiar things and a lot of VERY unfamiliar things.
On the bus ride out of Bangkok I saw mostly rundown buildings and homes but then out of nowhere there would be a decked out building that looked similar to the ones we saw in the Palace. There’s a lot of laundry hanging on porches and trash on the streets. The traffic was a little chaotic but not nearly as scary as in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
We left Bangkok in two double-decker busses along with the international workers. They served us a box lunch consisting of a bottle of water, a sandwich, bag of chips and a carton of Mango sticky rice which is one of the yummiest things I have ever eaten. I mean, seriously good stuff!
We arrived in Hua Hin in the afternoon and had a few hours to get settled into our rooms and check out the grounds. This is vacation for these missionaries and the C&MA treat them well. It’s nice to see them get to enjoy a little luxury knowing they’ve all made great sacrifices to minister on the field. People keep thanking us for making the sacrifice to be here to work with their kids but it’s really quite an amazing experience. I don’t feel like I have sacrificed anything compared to these wonderful people who’ve dedicated their lives to spreading the gospel.
The pool here is amazing! They have a little water slide and we’ve had a lot of fun on it with the rest of our team and some of the younger kids. The grounds are pretty big so we’re getting some exercise walking everywhere. We’re busy enough that the days are going by fast which makes it feel like we’re eating all the time. The next meal feels so soon after the last. But that’s not a complaint because the food is amazing! There are a few familiar “American” type foods but most of it is normal food for Thailand. There’s rice at every single meal including breakfast. There’s some interesting desserts and wonderful Thai tea! The ice cream here is the best ice cream I’ve ever tasted. I don’t know what makes it different but it’s wonderful!
We had 4 girls yesterday but one was only 6th grade and decided to go back with the younger group. Two of the three girls we have now are sisters, Alexis (10th grade) and Alina (9th grade). The other girl is a senior named Stephanie who’s going back to the states for college this next school year. Today we got to enjoy the zip line with girls and it was some good bonding time. We laughed and screamed together. :-) The Bible study time was been slow going and the girls don’t have a lot to say. We’re hoping as they get to know us that they’ll share more about where they are spiritually.
